Online Therapy in Massachusetts

Why Online Therapy?

At Dear Therapy, we offer online therapy only.

This is a purposeful choice to make care more accessible and flexible for our clients. Our virtual model allows us to serve people across Massachusetts, including AAPI, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent individuals, and people with disabilities.

We work with immigrants, couples, adults with ADHD, veterans, international students, and those navigating grief or major life transitions. Many of our clients have busy lives or face barriers that make in-person therapy difficult.

Online sessions remove those challenges by eliminating commutes and location limits while still providing high-quality, culturally responsive care.

Whether you live in Boston, Amherst, or anywhere in the state, we are here to offer inclusive therapy in Massachusetts that meets you where you are.

Effective, Research-Backed Care

One of the most common questions about online therapy is: Does it really work as well as in-person therapy?

Research says yes.

A 2023 non-randomized controlled trial published in Frontiers in Psychiatry compared therapist-supported online CBT with in-person CBT for individuals with major depressive disorder.

The results showed comparable improvements in both depressive symptoms and quality of life across both groups. Interestingly, participants in the online group also showed higher session completion rates than those in in-person therapy, highlighting the potential for better engagement through flexible access.

The evidence doesn’t stop there. A 2024 study from Yale School of Medicine found that telehealth was just as effective as in-person care in improving quality of life among patients receiving early palliative care. The findings support the broader use of virtual care, especially for individuals with mobility challenges, chronic illness, or barriers to in-person access.

At Dear Therapy, we’ve seen how strong, trusting relationships can form through the screen. Our therapists are trained to create warm and attuned spaces online.

We also recognize that providing care virtually supports our clinicians’ well-being, allowing them to work from safe and stable environments so they can show up more present and focused for every client.

Online therapy is not a second-best option. It is a proven, research-backed approach that makes care more accessible without compromising on quality.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

Online therapy with Dear Therapy is similar to in-person sessions, with a few small differences in setup.

At your scheduled time, you’ll join your therapist using a secure Google Meet link that we send in advance. Sessions usually last around 60 minutes. Your therapist will check that your video and audio are working, then you'll begin your conversation just like you would in a therapy office.

We always join from a quiet, private space so you have our full attention. If there are technical issues, we will reconnect or switch to a phone call to make sure your session continues smoothly.

It’s normal for the first session or two to feel a little different. But most people adjust quickly and find that online therapy feels natural. It’s private, flexible, and easy to access from wherever you are. If you have any questions, we’re here to help.
