Our approach

A little about how we work

Therapy that honors complexity, culture, and collective healing.

At Dear Therapy, we bring curiosity to your story and attention to the relationships, histories, and conditions shaping it. Your culture, race, queerness, and neurodivergence belong in the conversation whenever they matter to you.

The people behind Dear Therapy.

Your story has a context.
There is room for it here.

  • We keep the context in view.

Family roles, racism, migration, ableism, and expectations around gender can shape what feels safe, possible, or allowed. We make room to name that harm and understand how you have learned to survive it.

  • There is room for complexity.

You can love your family and need boundaries. Feel connected to your culture and question what you inherited. We can explore those tensions without asking you to choose a simpler story.

  • We shape the work together.

Your knowledge of your life guides our work. Together, we can question harmful messages, make room for grief and anger, and explore boundaries, relationships, and community connections that support the life you want.

Start with what feels important to you.

Our commitment to you

Care with room for every part of you.

You deserve care that takes your lived experience seriously. We make room for culture, identity, relationships, and the conditions shaping your life. Explore what that can look like for you.

Culture, race & migration Family expectations, identity, and belonging.

We work with Asian American, Black, Brown, Latine, and immigrant clients. Therapy can make room for racism, migration, cultural expectations, and the work of finding belonging across different communities. Your understanding of your own culture guides the conversation.

Queer & trans experiences Gender, relationships, and being known on your terms.

We welcome queer, trans, and gender-expansive clients. You can explore identity, disclosure, relationships, or concerns unrelated to gender or sexuality. You choose the language for your experience and what you want to focus on together.

Neurodivergence & everyday life Communication, sensory needs, masking, and capacity.

We support neurodivergent adults, including ADHD and autistic clients. You can bring the effort of masking, sensory overload, burnout, or navigating relationships. We make room to discuss how you communicate, process information, and manage your energy so those needs can inform the work.

Faith, family & inherited patterns Loyalty, grief, boundaries, and what you carry forward.

You can value your family or faith and still question expectations that hurt. We make room for spiritual questions, intergenerational trauma, belonging, and parenting differently from how you were raised. Together, we can explore what you want to keep, change, or understand more deeply.

These parts of life overlap.
You decide where we begin.

Come as you are.
Hold yourself dear.

A practice rooted in community.

Raised in Boston’s Chinatown, founder Yanyi Weng brings her experience as a Taishanese Chinese immigrant, clinician, and educator to Dear Therapy.

Why Dear Therapy began

She started the practice during the pandemic, as anti-Asian racism intensified and the need for culturally responsive care grew. Her aim: to expand access to mental health spaces for communities that have too often been left out.

Here, caring for yourself can sit alongside caring for family and community. Your language, history, and relationships are part of the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Before we begin.

The practical questions deserve care, too. Here’s what to know about starting therapy, paying for sessions, and getting support.

Starting therapy

What happens in the free consultation?

It’s a chance to talk about what brings you to therapy, what you hope to work on, and whether the clinician feels like a fit. Bring your questions. You don’t need a polished explanation to begin.

What will our first therapy session be like?

Your clinician will review the forms you completed, get to know you, and discuss what working together could look like. You can ask about their approach and share what would help you feel more comfortable.

Fees & insurance

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept commercial plans from Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Harvard Pilgrim, UnitedHealthcare, and Optum.

Coverage depends on your plan and clinician. Check with our team and your insurer about benefits and expected costs before your first appointment.

How do deductibles and copays work?
Deductible
What you pay toward covered services before your plan begins sharing certain costs.
Copay
A set amount you pay for a covered visit.
Coinsurance
A percentage of the covered cost that you pay.

Some services are covered before a deductible is met. Your plan determines what applies to therapy.

What if my insurance isn’t accepted?

You can pay directly for sessions. We can provide a superbill, an itemized receipt to submit to your insurer if your plan has out-of-network benefits. Reimbursement is decided by your insurer and isn’t guaranteed.

Can I pay without using insurance?

Yes. We accept credit or debit cards and HSA/FSA payments. Confirm your session fee with your clinician, and check eligible expenses with your HSA/FSA plan if you use one.

Are sliding-scale fees available?

Sliding-scale fees are offered. Ask your clinician about current availability and whether a reduced fee could work for your situation.

Appointments & support

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Please give at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. A fee applies to missed appointments and late cancellations or rescheduling. Ask your clinician about the fee and how to notify them.

Where can I get immediate or crisis support?

For immediate emotional or crisis support in the United States, call 988, text 988, or chat with the 988 Lifeline . Support is available 24/7.

For immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Need immediate support? In the U.S., call or text 988. For an emergency, call 911.
